I’m posting this message to prevent others from suffering from this nasty poisoning. If the ARS (Regional Health Agency) had widely communicated about the regular cases of ciguatera they’ve known about for 2 years in Martinique, we would never have eaten that yellow jack on Saturday…
So, my friend and I ate a freshly caught yellow jack in Petite Anse on the evening of September 30th and ended up at the university hospital with 30 hours of hospitalization on IV drips. After the first violent symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, convulsions), there’s the sequel of “festivities” for an undetermined period: extreme fatigue, body aches, headaches and stomach pains, burning sensations. And the cherry on top is a draconian diet – no animal proteins, coffee, chocolate, or alcohol for 1 month, no missions for 6 months or more… And with all that, you’re supposed to try to go to work. Have a good day everyone.

Hello, I am very often at Petite Anse and know its waters well. Was the jack purchased from fishermen, caught by yourself, or consumed in one of the small restaurants on the beach? I’m interested to know, so I don’t suffer the same fate. Wishing you a good recovery.

Shot with a speargun by my friend at Anse Chaudière. I got a lionfish at the same spot right after – it’s still in the fridge. The ARS didn’t think it was worthwhile to analyze it. I think we’re going to try to give it to a cat tonight.

In tropical regions, not all fish are edible… no need to analyze the fish, this disease remains a mystery to researchers… it’s going to be very difficult for many long months with the impossibility of consuming any seafood, including sardines… for my parents it lasted almost two years without being able to eat fish again… good luck… small consolation, it could have been Fugu poisoning… also present in the region.
